Oceano Azul Expedition - Azores 2018

In June of 2018, Oceano Azul Foundation set sail to the least known areas of the western Azores, in one of the most comprehensive scientific expeditions to be carried out in Portuguese waters. In partnership with the Waitt Foundation and National Geographic’s Pristine Seas, and in collaboration with the Portuguese Navy, the Hydrographic Institute and Portuguese Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf and several scientific institutions like the University of the Azores, we spent over 20 days and 650 miles exploring lesser-known coastal, open-sea and deep-sea ecosystems of the archipelago, making some incredible findings along the way, including a new hydrothermal field.
